Timing
The best time to visit the Panthéon
Three different visits stacked in one building — the nave, the crypt and the dome — and each one has its own timing.
See current listings on Viator ↗Mornings, right after opening
The first hour after opening is usually the calmest in the nave, where the pendulum and the main sightlines draw the biggest groups later in the day.
The crypt runs on its own clock
Because the stairway down narrows the flow of visitors, the crypt stays comparatively calm even when the nave above has filled with a school group or a tour — an easy way to dodge a crowd without leaving the building.
The dome isn't always open
In past seasons the colonnade has opened from April to October as a separate booked visit, and the monument's own site currently lists the panoramic view as closed. If the climb is the point of your visit, check its status before fixing a date.
Closures worth knowing about
The building is shut on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, and opens later than usual on the first working Monday of each month. It can also close or change its hours around a panthéonisation ceremony, so glance at the monument's calendar before fixing a date.
Combining it with the rest of the Left Bank
The Jardin du Luxembourg is a short walk downhill, and the market street of rue Mouffetard sits just the other side of the hill — both make an easy pairing either side of a Panthéon morning.
